Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 74992
Offer multiple sets of default colors for charts
Last modified: 2013-09-25 20:41:28 UTC
I suggest the following feature to be addd to the Calc/Chart module: An option to have different sets of colors and also the possibility of creating own sets. Then I could have e.g. one set of light colors for printing, one set of dark colors for presentations, one set that fits best with three or four actors, one that is good when I want to compare a dozen rows. I don't know whether 'templates' would be a correct word for this. Some 'templates' could come with the program, others could be created and saved by the user. (Something similar to the 'color variation' or 'color pattern' feature in PowerPoint.) This would go further than just have other default colors for charts (cf. http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/ entry/vote_for_nicer_default_colors) Related issues: 36672 „Styles concept for chart components“, also discussing the description 'templates'. 67885 „Allow creation of colors in charts“ (which I couldn't read).

I would say, as you mentionned, that this would be implemented with styles for charts.
@Iha: pls take care of this feature, i also support this idea.

Another related issue: issue 67648 Allow different sets of colour and share them with other office/drawing apps such as the Gimp and Inkscape (use a common format, allow defining a common resource directory) Due to draw's many limitations OO.o is often used in conjunction with those specialised bitmap & vector drawing apps. Redefining the same palette in multiple apps is a shore and causes synchronisation problems. The Gimp and Inkscape already use common palettes for this reason.

For a very good reading on color-selection (because I assume if this feature gets implemented, we will also have additional color-styles) see: http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/41732/Expert%20Color%20Choices.pdf See also my comment to issue 7019 (towards the end of the issue). (http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=7019) For other color-sets, see: http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/43519/Chart2_Default%20Colours-EXAMPLES.odt Many thanks and hopefully we will see soon some more colors in Chart.
a style for black and white would be also nice, which would then set the pattern inside the chart's sections automatically to white, black, checkered etc. When printing out colored charts black and white, it is hard to see the differences
Sorry to say, but this will not make it into OOo 3.0 as feature deadline is tomorrow and the translation relevant UI changes are not ready due to limited resources -> changing target to 3.1.
> changing target to 3.1 I had to work recently with MS Office 2007 (I do not have otherwise access to it), and I must say, it does beat OOo with regard to professional colours (and actually in many other aspects). Please note that MS Office 2007 is just an intermediate product, and, IF I understand it correctly, MS will release a new - significantly changed - office suite in 2009. I do not know IF that version is a more definitive one (probably not), but OOo is already lagging behind and I have serious concerns that it won't be able to catch up. This issue raised some important concerns: - What colour sets will be used? - Will they be compatible with other applications? - How will this be implemented from an UX-point of view? - Kust coloures? Styles? Surface patterns? - B/W-checkered styles? I do not remember any discussion on this topic. Therefore I think it is advisable to press this issue a little bit harder.
