Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 65038
Calc - 2.4MB file with miniscule amount of data in the file.
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
When I save attached file with Calc it has size of 2.4MB, which seems to be wrong for just bunch of cells. When I save the same file with Excel fiel size is reduced to 8 kbytes, which is much better.

The .xls file in the attached zip does indeed get much smaller after being opened and resaved by Excel, so there's something funny with the file. How did the file get generated? With Calc? Can you find a procedure for reproducibly generating such problematic files? Possibly related or dupe of issue 59220.
The file was generated by inhouse app, then second file was generated by the same app, Vlookup from one to another was added, lines below 11 were removed and first file was saved.
I'm guessing that you used OO Calc to do the editing, but there's still not enough information to reproduce the behavior and determine if OO is at fault, rather than Excel or your inhouse app. Please see http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/scdocs/issuewritinghelp.html and http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/bug_writing_guidelines.html for tips. It might help to attach the file before editing with OO, give a procedure for reproducing what you see, and say explicitly how it differs from what you expected.
No clear reproducible procedure, no followup for > 2 wks: I'll resolve this issue for the time being. It can be reopened if the requested information is provided.
Hi, the document has this big size due to the also saved vlookup sheet from the linked file. This is necessary as you want the data given from the vlookup to appear in an unupdated document. Excel doesn't show these values as I've seen. So we have possibly the choice to shorten the place needed in the file according to DR by using another method of storing the data in the Excel file. I have better testcase (see attached .zip). testcase.txt is original file, xls.xls is produced by importing original into Excel and saving it from Excel (size 15KB), xls-ooo.xls is produced by opening xls.xls with Calc and saving it in .xls format (note its size - 76KB). Of further interest 000.xls - produced by importing original file into OOO and saving it in .xls format (75KB), ooo-xls.xls - produced by opening ooo.xls with Excel and saving it in .xls format (9KB).
