Description nicklaw 2005-10-08 23:32:01 UTC
This report concerns the insert note feature (F3) in sheet. It is the 1st of
three problems with the note feature, the other two problems will be reported
separately from this report. At first this problem appeared intermittent but I
have now figured out how you can make it fail every time. Basically when you
attach a note to a cell in sheet, (by selecting the cell and then choosing
[insert] then [note])the note box appears, you can resize the box by pulling at
its corners etc. As you positioned the cusrsor over the green corners of the
note the cursor would change to an arrow, either horizontal arrow or vertical or
diagonal depending upon which corner you were positioned over. Now I noticed
intermittently that the arrows sometimes did not appear. Finally I figured out
the sequence of events that cause the arrows not to appear. If you select a cell
by clicking the right hand button on the mouse so that the cells menu appears,
you then immediately click on the menu option [insert] then [note] the note will
appear and if you move the cursor over the corners the sizing arrows do not
appear. The key trigger for this bug is that must click right on the cell first.
Using the F3 key does not show this problem. ..... Two more [insert note] bugs
to follow shortly. (email me if you need to know urgently) nlaw@naad.fsnet.co.uk

I don't understand, why you select a cell with the right mouse button making
visible or inserting a note. If you do this with the left mouse button there is
no problem.

I probably click right on the cell, maybe 20% of the time out of habit. For
every cell that I insert a note on I want the note to always be visible on
the spreadsheet and on the final printout. To make the note permanently
visible you click right on the cell and select [show note]. For the
particular spreadsheet I use, which I complete every week I probably click
right on a cell and select [show note] maybe 30 times. Because I do this so
frequently sometimes I do it before I have actually inserted the note. This
then triggers the bug as described. Of course I could also have been
clicking right on the cell and selecting [format cells] or any of the other
options. Just the mere fact of clicking right on the cell to view the menu
will trigger the bug.

I know how to get round the bug, (don't click right on the cell first) however
that's not really the point, the fact is clicking right on the cell, maybe
formatting the cell then inserting the note should not cause the resizing
arrows to vanish on the inserted note.

This bug is 100% reproducible. Let me know if you need any further information.

Regards
Nick.

First, you cannot select [show note] in a cell without a note.
I was not able to reproduce the described behaviour. Always I select insert a
note in the menu, after right-clicking in a cell more than 30 times, the note
has the green buttons to change the form of the note.

In this context (inserting a note) I found that if you try to move the note it
disappears. If you entered a text before the notemarker will be shown. Moving
the note is only possible after activating show note and a click in the note.

Sorry Nick,

I have overseen something. May be the cause is my English, that isn't so good.
I can confirm that under the described facts the arrows doesn't appear.
This and the other fact concerning movingthe note is no problem for me. If a
note should visible all the time, it's easy to change the form and /or
location, when the note is shown.

I have attached an avi movie that demonstrates this problem. This movie has an
audio soundtrack that provides commentary on the problem. This problem has
existed in all Ooo releases since the note resizing feature was added.

On a positive point I find the 'insert note' feature a very useful addition to
open office. Once these minor issues are resolved this feature will be as good
as the Microsoft Office note feature.

If you require further information, please lket me know ... Nick Law

just one additional comment I would like to make about this problem. It has
been mentioned that why click right on the cell in the first place ? Well one
reason might be that the user has just migrated from Microsoft Office to open
Office. In Microsoft Office to insert a comment you click right on the cell and
select [insert comment]. So somebody more familiar with Microsoft Office and
the insert comment feature is more likely to see this particular bug just
because they are more likely to click right on the cell out of habit. Another
reason that you might click right on the cell is that you may want to format
the cell, after having formatted the cell, you then insert a note and again
you'll see the lack of resizing arrows around the note text box.

Hi Frank, I'm checked with 2.0 on a version downloaded today on two different
machines (one linux, one XP) and the bug is still there. Please review the
attached movie domonstration, if you follow the exampole in the movie you will
be able to reproduce it 100% of the time.

This only occurs when it is the same cell an you go direct to the note-insert-
menu (contextmenu is still active). If you make a click anywhere in the table
to make the contexmenu unvisible and then open the insert-note-menü the handels
are shown.
