Description the_redburn 2005-08-31 22:07:14 UTC
Steps to reproduce:
1. Select a full column by clicking on its header
2. Copy the selection

Result:
The full column (65536 rows) is copied

Expected result:
Only the first rows are copied (until the last rows which isn't empty)
This is the Excel's behavior

Hi,

IMHO Calc works in the logical way. The User decided to copy all Rows in the
column to the clipboard by clicking on the column header. So no need for
changing this. BTW whats about having five empty cells above the filled one and
you want to copy also these 5 empty cells ? Using your approach you're not able
to do so.

Nevertheless re-assigned to requirements for final decission.

Actually, I'm not sure, but the first cells are perhaps copied.
But it would be even better to have a small popup menu appearing in the
spreadsheet near the selection and asking us to choose how we want OOo to handle
this action (like there is in Office 2003 when by example we extend some cells
to other cells by clicking on the corner (after having selected them) (with OOo,
there is a dialog which appear when we delete cells, but the popup for the copy
shouldn't be a dialog, it should be optional to choose an action)).

This is still an annoyance in version 3.1.1. My use case is I get a lot of
single column lists in XLS format. I would like to select the whole column to
copy it to a text file but it copies all 65,536 rows currently. To get around it
I have to manually scroll down to the last row of data to select just the non
empty rows. Excel does not copy empty rows in this case. If there are empty rows
between valid data, they should still be copied. The number of rows available is
an arbitrary technical limit. This will be more problematic when spreadsheets
grow even larger and have more empty rows to get copied.

Problem is still existing and annoying.
Same problem bug as: Bug 90569
