Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 52810
Reassign the function of Delete key on the keyboard
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
Changing from MS Excel noticed that delete key brings up a "delete contents" menu rather than clears the current cell or group of cells. Learned that backspace does that, just by coinsidence, although was trying to find anything in help about it. I am sure that some users will also notice this and I wonder if it is a good idea to reassign the "clear" function to the "delete" key and its current pop-up menu to some other key or better the mouse "right-click" menu. Thank you
IMHO this isn't a good idea because mostly all users of OOo Calc who are not used to the Excel way would submit a bugreport about it. Also the Calc approach is the more logical one as backspace is used also in other applications to erase just the text. DEL in this case gives the user the freedom to choose. Re-assignerd to requirements to decide. Frank
This is a duplicate of Issue 9392 opened in November of 2002. It is still counterintuitive to a lot of people, so there should be an option to swap the behavior of the backspace and del keys for those users that want to change it from the default. All anyone has asked for to date is an option to change it from the default, not to actually change the default for current users. If changing the defaults is why providing the option (not default) has been held up for 2.5 years, that is not a good reason. Regardless, this should be marked as a duplicate of 9392.
