Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 34774
Suggesting improvement for window/freeze
Last modified: 2014-01-16 16:35:06 UTC
Example (which I am referring to all the time in this text): 1. Select cell C3. 2. Window/Freeze. 3. Select H8 (or any other cell >C, >3). 4. Press the home key of your keyboard. 5. Which cell is now selected? Answer: A8. In my opinion, this would be more convenient in most cases: Do step 1-4 above. 5. Cell C8 should now be selected. 6. Press the home key of your keyboard again. 7. Now cell A8 could be selected (if ever). Ctrl-Home selects A1, but C3 seems to me to be the obvious cell to be selected. Or put in other words, the sheet is still freezed at C3: 1. Ctrl-Home is pressed. 2. If highlighted cell is C3 or less (in the range A1:B32000 or A1:IV2), then highlight A1. 3. Else C3 is highlighted. 1. Home is pressed. 2. If highlighted cell at column 3 or less, then highlight the cell at column 1 (same row as before). 3. Else the cell at column 3, the same row, is highlighted. A little comment on this: MS Excel (which I don't use anymore, but still remember fragments from it...) takes you the first unfreezed cell at the same row when pressing home, but I don't think pressing home again will take you to column 1, so my suggestion will take the best from both worlds: Pressing Home once and it could act like Excel, pressing Home once more and it could act like OOo... The most convenient solution I ever seen was when using a DOS text editor called "Brief" if I remember it correctly. It worked like this: Home: Takes you to the the beginning of the current line. Home Home: Takes you to the top of the screen. Home Home Home: Takes you to the top of the whole document. But again, this was a text editor, but maybe it could cause some inspiration...
Hi Bettina, one for you. Frank

I am subscribing for this suggestion to improve useability of the Window - Freeze feature.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".

At the moment there are two options on the Pull-down menu ( 'Split' and 'Freeze' ) how about a third 'FreezeXXX' When you have a big header section that you want to show - but not all the time and then you have the rest of the table that could do with a row to act as a header - then you the last line of the header section could contain the column headers. This would end up as the best of both worlds - you can see the header section of the spreadsheet ( without having to un-freeze ) and then when you scroll down into the body of the spreadsheet there is a single row ( or a number of rows ) that remain as part of the header. Personally I would change the current 'Freeze' functionality to work as described above - I can't see any loss of usability - i can only see 'Freeze+' as improved functionality I include a spreadsheet 'Freeze_improvement.ods' to give you an idea of what I talking about.
