Description dmrq 2004-05-27 09:53:35 UTC
If you have a table of data in an spreadsheet and you use autofilter facility,
you get some rows hidden according to the chosen values in the header of the
table. That's perfect. However, if you paste over cells in multiple rows in a
filtered table, the value you paste is actually written in all the rows
(including the hidden ones). The same happens if you use the content extension
facility (I don't know how you name this facility. I mean the small square at
the right-bottom corner of a cell that can be used to extend its content to
adjacent cells). So, if you use this facility, the behaviour is much the same:
the hidden rows are also updated. I'm not sure this is an error, that's why I
report it as an enhancement, but excel works in the opposite way: hidden rows
are not updated. From my view is much better not to update hidden rows (in the
excel way). Feel free to contact me for further details

If you paste something in a non empty cell you will get a warning (see also
issue 364). If you don't get such a messagebox, please check
TOOLS-OPTIONS-OPENOFFICE.ORG CALC-GENERAL because it is optional and could be
disabled.
This warning does not appear if the area is filled by using the
"autofillhandle". => Bettina, please check if this could be enhanced.

Indeed, it works in the way you mention in your comment. My suggestion is that
only visible cells should be updated. I make this suggestion based on two
points: 1. Excel works that way and 2. (most important) This is the behaviour
that the average user expects (at least that's what I think). Intuitively, one
expects that only cells you see will be updated. I think that, even if you show
a warning saying that non-empty cells will be overwritten, the user will keep
thinking that you mean 'visible' non-empty cells.

A friend of mine have the same problem :it's something he use to do in excel,
and he asked me for any help (removing this behaviour or finding a way to not
have the problem).
I haven't find any practical workaround for the moment

I would consider this existing functionality a bug and the single reason why I
cannot fully migrate away from Excel. It just doesn't make sense to clobber
hidden cells.
