Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 23612
Split autocorrect/autocomplete setting for application specific
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:12:27 UTC
The same AutoCorrect option is used for both Writer and Calc, when I turn "Captialize first letter of every sentence" on or off in Tools/AutoCorrect/Options for either Writer or Calc, the same option is changed in the other. If the option is considered desireable in Calc, it should at least be a separate option from the one in Writer; I only very rarely want this behavior in Calc, but do find it occasionally useful in Writer. If the options can't be separated, at least using the same dialog box for both would allow a little better control; the Wriber version allows distinguishing between new and modified text, but the Calc one does not.
RFE Split autocorrect/autocomplete: Auto Capitalize for Calc instead of global. some people are confuse with this setting. but some still feel that some function is helping in Writer. So the setting will be available: Global or application specific. As writer.xcs is exist I think it is possible to make this sepearate, CMIIW

It emerged during Italian QA tests on OOo 2.0.1-RC4 that this problem still confuses users. I'm in favor of having per-setting Autocorrect options, all enabled by default, and being able to turn Autocorrect off/on per application. [Suggested by Alessandro during Italian QA tests]
There is an even more annoying issue here than capitalisation (I would say it's a bug and probably worthy of a separate issue report). Format a cell as 'Fraction' and try to enter 1/2 or 1/4. You will get text instead of a number if AutoCorrect fractions is on. IMO this is a clear contradiction of the user's intention. Is it possible to apply the autocorrection later so that Calc doesn't decide that the cell should be text instead of a number value, or side step autocorrection for non-text cells? This also applies to Writer tables as well and probably anywhere else where number formatting can be applied.
As mentioned years ago, there are several requests for this. I would really like to use Autocomplete in Writer but not in Calc. For examples, the single quote correction is nice in writer, but a pain in Calc, where I routinely use single quotes to mean "don't change my text" - but have to use "undo" after every single quote to prevent that change! Similarly with typing fractions (e.g., 1/2 to mean 0.5 or a date is rendered as the half-fraction symbol) in Calc is, frankly, absurd, whereas it IS desirable in Writer and Impress. I don't understand why this request has been ignored for nearly 7 years. Is there some fundamental reason that autocorrect must be linked across all programs? Apparently not, because the Autocomplete component is separate in each. Can anything be done about this?
