Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 15969
[calc] forumla bar is always LTR, making editing mixed text impossible
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:00:01 UTC
the forumala bar of calc is always LTR, regardless of the cell directionality. This makes editing mixed bidi text which already is in the cell nearly impossible- there is no way to tell where new text will be added.
DL->NN: Could you please takeover?
The input line is always LTR to allow display and editing of formulas. Falko, is this the right behavior? If not, do we need special treatment for formulas?

confirming, I already reported this
I confirm: Formula bars (Writer tables and Calc) will _always_ use LTR. This is due to an immense implementation effort and the minimal impact it has on users. This solution was already agreed on from Arabic side (Waleed Hosny). Please close this one. Thx.
I totally agree, there's almost no need to use L2R, however this is the Right Thing to Do (TM) so I suggest setting a (late) fix date to fix that. Text engine should *always* IMHO include an option for R2L jsut like MSWord's behaviour - click Ctrl-Shift and you're in buisness.
>there's almost no need to use R2L As many people use spread sheets as a "poor man's database", and since even without that colum titles tend to be text (and thus possibly contain RTL), I would argue that the need is very much there. >Text engine should *always* IMHO include an option for R2L jsut ike >MSWord's behaviour - click Ctrl-Shift and you're in buisness agreed.
DL->FT: Please take care of this issue until we create a specification on this.
Reassigned to office later, feature and P4.
The formular bar stays LTR even in RTL environments. No change planned.

* This bug has been mentioned in few of the press reviews of OOo. IMO, we should consider re-opening
I was very surprised to determine that this bug is closed. This is a very frustrating issue when working with mixed text. Please consider re-open it.. Thanks.
I also frequently come across this problem in my personal use of OOo. I disagree with the assessment that it has minimal impact on users.
