Description rodro 2003-04-23 05:46:05 UTC
Hi, I've been trying to use the Data Pilot, and found out about a few things
that need improving or would add functionality:

1. It chokes on large datasets or seems to take forever to respond
(~100,000 records, TXT, DBF, SQL Server, etc.) (1).
2. It takes too long to start or restart the Data Pilot or to recalculate
   even the smallest datasets (1).
3. A PAGE section.
4. Unlimited fields in all sections (PAGE, ROW, COLUMN, DATA).
5. Could use a multi-select filter for field data in all sections a la
   Office XP (checkbox list).
6. Dynamic charts would be nice.

(1) OOo also takes up to 99% CPU time while doing this. Excel just flies. Don't
know if its the data access component in OOo or what.

In short, speed and functionality equal that of Office XP's Pivot tables
(Mostly there, just needs polishing).

Hope these can be addressed in OOo 1.5 or 2.0 or something
(maybe dyna-charts in 3.0? :-)).

OOo is great. Keep up the good work.

Bye.

Hi Bettina,

Just as an addition:

I think OOo has to retrieve all the data again whenever it needs to
recalculate the Pivot Table. I don't think it caches the data.

It seems Excel caches the last updated data in an invisible list
inside the file, not constrained by the 64K row limit, and when it
needs to recalculate when moving fields around, it does so without
accesing the data source, quite fast.

Thanks for your time.

I filed a separate issue a long time ago about what you call "dynamic charts" or
as MS calls it, "Pivot Charts." See issue 14506

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
