Description tryoung@exeverse.com 2016-02-07 06:05:47 UTC
I use OpenOffice Calc with a Microsoft keyboard. This keyboard features a dedicated Windows Calculator launch button.

What I expect to happen:
- press the Calculator button
- Windows Calculator launches
- Windows Calculator takes focus, becomes front window
- Subsequent launches of Windows Calculator should bring current instance to front

What actually happens:
- press the Calculator button
- Windows Calculator launches
- Windows Calculator is hidden behind OpenOffice Calc, lacks focus
- Subsequent launches creates a new instance of Windows Calculator, lacks focus

Tested with: Windows XP, Windows 7, OpenOffice 4.1.2

I use OpenOffice Writer and Calc a lot. This bug does not show up when using the Writer, or any other application. Only when Calc is running on the machine. It doesn't matter if Calc is foreground or background. Merely having Calc running causes the errant behavior.

I do a lot of one-off price calculations from supplier price lists. Whenever I use Calc, it causes a loss of performance and the potential for errors because I have to re-orient myself with the mouse, bring the calculator to front, etc. If I forget to bring the Calculator to front and focus, I could end up omitting important calculations. It's not practical or efficient to try and do one-off calculations inside OpenOffice Calc.

I have the same behaviour under Ubuntu. But completely independent from AOO.
So I think this isn't an AOO issue.

mroe: I think that's a confusing response, and doesn't help verify that a bug exists.

I believe this is an OpenOffice bug. It only happens when AOO Calc is running on various Windows machines, and is unique to something related to AOO Calc. It doesn't happen with AOO Writer or any other software I run such as GIMP, or my Point of Sales software.

I would be willing to believe that it's a Microsoft driver, Microsoft keyboard manager, or GTK issue, but then I would expect this same odd behavior with more software, especially with the other components of AOO.

So, what exactly is happening in your case? When you run AOO Calc, you press the Calculator launch button on your keyboard, and your Calculator opens up another unfocused instance behind AOO Calc? Does this same behavior exist when you completely terminate AOO Calc? What do you mean by completely independent of AOO?

I'd like to enhance one part of my description....

This happens so long as AOO Calc is running. It can be minimized to the taskbar, windowed, or maximized. It can be foreground or background, focused or unfocused.
