Description Ash 2011-08-01 14:37:39 UTC
Hello OOo development team.

I've noticed that I have no other choice to Show/Hide comments other than
going thru all of them one by one.

This could be a pain when I want to show the comments while editing,
but not to print it.

So, adding an option to toggle comments upon printing would come in handy.
This feature would save a lot of time in cases like this.

I hope this can be implemented in future version of OOo.

Thank you in advance.

getting rid of value "enhancement" for field "severity".
For enhancement the field "issue type" shall be used.

F5 - Comments
Comment 3 Ash 2013-07-07 08:09:05 UTC
Pressing F5 toggles "Navigator" which has nothing to do with view/hide comments.
Or is there something I am missing?
Please verify again and provide me with some info.
Thank you.

I am now using AOO 3.4.1 on Windows 7 64-bits.

Please provide sketch / example from other application if existing solutions aren't satisfactory.

No response from Archie -> NOTABUG

Sorry. Been a bit bust lately...

> see comments in navigator
Reading the comments in Navigator is not practical. The comments are intended for other users who shares the same file. If the comments are hidden, the Navigator must first be activated. Others may edit the file without reading the comments this way. Plus, all the comments are viewed in a single line without a break nor a wrap. If the comment is longer than a sentence, which in many cases possible, renders the comment unreadable or very hard to read. I'm sorry, but this is not the solution.

> see comments in printing
Thank you. But I am aware of this feature. This controls whether or not to print the comments separately at the end of the document. This has nothing to do with my request.

> Please provide sketch / example from other application if existing solutions aren't satisfactory.
You have marked this as "Not a bug." Yes, I know this is not a bug. That is why I have added "RFE" to the title as this is a feature request. This is a usability issue. Whether or not other applications have a solution does not matter.

Maybe the issue on this was not clear. I will state them once again.
 - The comments will be printed if they are not hidden.
 - The comments need to be left visible for other users to see.
 - If the comments does not need to be printed, it has to be hidden one by one.
 - Using the Navigator is not practical.
 - Format - Page... - Sheet - Print - Comments is not related to this issue.

Request:
Please add the feature to control the printing of the comments (which works differently from Format - Page... - Sheet - Print - Comments) so that the comments can be left visible, but excluded from printing.

Thank you, and sorry for all the fuss.

Thanks for clarifying and sorry for being eager to close this request.

IMHO displaying all the comments at once in a document with many comments is a bad idea in terms of visibility.

Personally can't accept this enhancement request.

I am sorry for taking up your time. I appreciate your response very much as there are so many issues out there left unattended.

I understand your point and I agree. It is very reasonable. If I had the full control of all the documents then I would come up with something else, too.

But at the end of the day, it's the end users who decide what they want to do with their files disregard how unreasonable it may be. And it is quite common to see files like I stated thrown around from office to office...

It is only a feature request. I know its priority is not high either. If it is too much, then it's ok. But if it can be implemented, I will very much appreciate it. Thank you.

Maybe it is hard to see the problem, I will try to visualize it better.

Let's say, we have a spreadsheet consists of 3-4 comments per page, 5 pages per sheet. Not too many. If we have 5 sheets of those, you already have almost 100 comments that you will have to go thru.

It has to be kept visible in order to let people see it. If you hide it, it may be overlooked which defeats the purpose of inserting comments.

And 3-4 comments per page is not too many, really.

How about adding a menu item like;
View -> Comments -> View/Hide All?

this RFE could be rephrased in a more general way, to include also Draw/Impress: display comments in a consistent way across all application modules (may be following the way how it is done in Writer)

I can see this happening with Draw/Impress, but maybe not with Calc. I think there would still be people who will prefer the current individual comment controls, too. If there is an option, users can decide what they want. Changing the current implementation to what you suggested might take away that option.

This is just an opinion anyway. I can't guess which will work better...
Please decide as you see it appropriate.
