Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 5759
DataPilot: allow more than 8 data fields
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:31:59 UTC
DataPilot doesn't allow more than 8 fields in data, row or column areas. There should appear a scrollbar, when dragging more fields in. When one opens a MS Excel file including Pivot Table with more than 8 data fields and 'Refresh' it, table refreshes with all fields included. When trying to modify with 'Start' button, fields over 8 disappear. Bug exists (at least) in Windows versions of OOo 641 and 1.0. The same problem was in StarOffice 5.x, too. Regards.. Alo
Hi, not DEFECT because it's implemented whith only 8 data fields. -> Enhancement -> Falko Best regards, Peter
The core implementation is able to handle more than 8 fields (Excel import works) -> The UI (layout dialog) has to be extended.

This is a major limitation of datapilot and makes it next to worthless when retrieving data from a large database. Not fixed in 1.1
Would like to use OO for database reporting, but just having noted this issue on columns. So, can only agree with Karl, this is not usable as it is.
Hello Niklas, please give approval for this evaluated OO.o 2.0 flagged issue. If you confirm with the target OO.o 2.0, then please keep it on your owner (or the owner of the concerning developer) for implementation. In case you want this issue for 'OOo Later', then please reset the target milestone. If you decline the issue finally, please set the resolution to 'Wontfix' (but do not close). In case of 'OOo Later' or 'Wontfix' please reset it on Bettina's owner. Thank you.
The necessary changes in the dialog can't be done for 2.0.

As it is only the user interface, it is possible to create your own user interface for DataPilots for adding more data fields. For example see MyDataPilot.sxc from http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/hillview/OOo/ which contains a macro with a dialog that allows you to add more than 8 data fields. Thanks, Ian
This ENHANCEMENT is necessary. If open a MS Excel file including Pivot Table with more than 8 data fields and trying to modify with 'Start' button, fields over 8 disappear.. are lost. The solution from 'iannz' (it is possible to create your own user interface for DataPilots for adding more data fields) not yet acceptable for a final user software. The most OpenOffice.org user's are USERS only. Don't developers, don't understand macro language or implementation. --- From the OpenOffice.org site: "OpenOffice.org is a...office suite" "Compatible with other major office suites...." " Why OpenOffice.org? OpenOffice.org is synonymous with quality" --- I'm (and many users)don't could import ours excel files.... could not migrate files from MS Excel to OpenOffice.org. And it is a simple resource.... (Excuse me! my english is poor.. does not exist)
I stumbled on this problem using OOo 2.2.1. I was able to circumvent it using the macro sugested by Iannz but it's still a suboptimal solution. After having generated my Pivot Table, if I or someone else inadvertently invoke Start on it, opening the default wizard, the pivot table is regenerated and only the first eight data fields remain.
I am waiting resolving this problem. It is impossible to use OO for me, 8 fields is not enough for serious work, not enough for business.
Set target to 3.x. We should remove this limitation if it is only a dialog limitation.
Here another vote for this issue. I am associating Data pilot with gracefully summarizing large amount of data. 8 entries not sufficient. (Should be 100's)

This issue is important and listed on the quarterly review for Calc: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/2008_Q2_Review_of_Spreadsheet_Project
Changed owner accordingly.
I confirm that this issue is a show stopper for migrating a certain type of users to OOo. Is it anything non-coding people (like me) can do to help developpers progress on this issue?
Should we want a real data pilot able to manage huge quantity of data, it is absolutely necessary that the number of rows and columns will not be limited to 8. It just does not make sense and turns the feature worthless. Best regards

I have to add my voice to this. This is a show stopper for our organisation switching the majority of users over to OO. We would love to support OO - but without this feature its just not quite practical yet. Need to be able to view and use Pivots created in Excel with sometimes hundreds of fields. Love it in other respects - great work!
Bonjour Merci d'autoriser un nombre illimité de champs données, lignes, colonnes, dans el pilote de données, comme pour EXCEL! Bon courage
Is it possible to extend the number of limit in data field? We are facing lot of problem while creating MIS.
This bug is almost 8 years old now. Is anyone awake?!? Bug Van Winkle?
How can be increased no. of fields in data field to use Data Pilot. it's very urgent because we are unable to complete our MIS reports. Regards, Pravindra Kumar
Can a Developer report to the community, a little explanation, for why a limitation that seems to be only in configuration dialogue of data pilot, takes so many years without solving?. Data pilot it's a powerful tool, and seems work with more than eight field, when import the file from other program. Also could be good, if don't undo the position fields when enter in the configuration dialogue.
The problem is PJ's decision that this is not a defect. As soon as it's labeled an enhancement, it'll never be taken up unless a developer finds it interesting. As a programmer, heavy Excel user, and someone who has made several short-lived attempts to use Calc instead in the past, I know this is makes DataPilot all but useless. Enhancement or defect, it should be higher priority than many "defects". I think of it as a defect because a UI is not supposed to impose constraints on the functionality to which it's an interface. Unfortunately I don't know C++ and do know that the person who could most efficiently fix this is the person who implemented it in the first place.
Please, test this feature on LO : http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/libreoffice/2010-December/004781.html
This limitation of data pilot makes it difficult for users to shift to Open Office from other Office Packages

fixed in CWS dr79 Added support for unlimited number of fields in page/column/row/data area: - Area shows scrollbar if number of contained fields exceeds available space - On drag&drop, all areas show a bold black insertion cursor while dragging - On drag&drop, all areas scroll automatically while dragging on first/last field
Great news! :)
back to QA
verified in internal build cws_dr79

How do I get this into my Open Office?
