Description rostrow 2005-03-01 19:45:38 UTC
Validity/Input Help does not work with merged cells.

1. Create a merged cell consisting of cells A5:F5.
2. Create a border around the merged cell (makes it easy to see the cell).
3. Select the merged cell.
3. Data/Validity/Input Help - Click "Show input help when cell is selected" box,
enter a title message and click OK button to close the dialog.
4. Now when you click on the merged cell it will display the title message.
5. Horizontally scroll the sheet to the right so the first column of the merged
cell (A) is off the screen.
6. Now try clicking on the merged cell. The note will not appear.

It does work correctly for merged cells when they are scrolled off the right
edge of the screen. The Title Message stays visable, hugging the right edge,
untill the left end of the merged cells disappears past the right edge of the
screen.

OS: Windows XP Professional SP2
OOo: 2.0 Beta RC

Steps to Duplicate:

1) Merge several cells in a row.
2) Select the merged cell and select Data | Validity... from the menu.
3) Click on the Input Help tab. Check the "Show input help when cell is
selected." option.
4) Enter a Title and Input help. Click on OK.
5) The help text should display.
6) Scroll the columns to the left. Note that once the first cell scrolls off the
screen the help prompt disappears. Selecting another cell and then the merged
cell again does not redisplay the help text.
7) Scroll the columns to the right. Once the first cell redisplays, the help
text does not reappear even though the cell is still selected.
8) Click on the cell again. The help text reappears.

Sorry, but it's not a defect.

MS Excel works in the same way, not exactly but they do scroll the input help
out of sight, just a bit later.

So re-flaged as enhancement and re-assigned.

This has nothing to do with merged cells, but help vanishes when scrolling, so that in particular cases (if help appeared outside visible sheet area) it might not become visible at all.

To avoid misleading information in comments I will submit a new issue after check for DUPlicates.
