Information for Distributors

As a first step, please check the provisions stipulated in our OEM and CD-ROM page. Then please send an email to cdrom@openoffice.org indicating:

  • Name as you would like it to be listed.
  • URL to link to. (This is for those of you who use a website to sell the CD. If you do not use a website, it is not needed.)
  • Location. Your country and state/county at the minimum. Your city or town would be appreciated by potential customers.
  • The version of OpenOffice.org which you will have on the CD. "Current Stable Release" is sufficient.
  • That you have read and understood the requirement of including a copy of the licenses with each CD-ROM you distribute.
  • Understand that you may still distribute OpenOffice.org at any time. Even if you have not yet received a reply to your email, you may still freely distribute the software.
  • The Distributor's list is maintained by volunteers (actually only one volunteer), and it may take quite some time for your listing to appear. Please be patient, as it will appear eventually. Repeated emails won't speed things up, unfortunately.
  • Please ensure your email is in plain text. Emails in HTML format are usually treated as spam by my anti-spam filters, so non-plain text may mean that I don't see your email.

Please also subscribe to the mailing lists described below. Doing so will allow us to inform you of updates, new builds, etc., and also allow for discussion on issues pertaining to CD-ROMs.

If you provide OpenOffice.org pre-installed on machines you sell, we would also be interested. If requested, we can include a notation that you supply OEM installations.

Files: What To Distribute

Please refer to the Files Page for the latest information on which files to distribute.

We recommend the use of our pre-built ISO images which may be downloaded. Information on where to find the images, or to use BitTorrent to download them, may be found on the Iso Download page.

Community Distributor

A Community Distributor is anyone who is distributing OpenOffice.org. We have a Community Distributor banner; we also have various logos, banners and graphics, of better quality, that do not say Community Distributor but which you are free to use. There is no obligation to use the Community Distributor banner, however you must request permission to use the logos. This may be done by sending an email to the person responsible. If you are offering a CD-ROM, you are a Community Distributor.

There are some obligations (and many benefits) to being a Community Distributor.

  • You must place a disclaimer, clearly visible to all interested in downloading the application, that reads:

These binaries (installable software) are in development. They may not be fully stable and should be used with caution. We make no claims about them.

  • Please also join the this project. We encourage you to join so that we may coordinate work more efficiently.

  • Some of the benefits: OpenOffice.org receives well over two million page hits every week. You are also joining in distributing a product and enlarging a project that is changing the world.

Mailing Lists

We have three primary mailing lists. You must be subscribed to these to post unmoderated messages. We encourage all to join the cdrom@distribution.openoffice.org list, as it is for discussion. But it is only obligatory to join the "announce@distribution.openoffice.org" list.

  • Distributor's mailing list.: For discussion on issues relating to CD ROM distribution of the software.
  • Statistics: The list to collect site activity statistics. Not a discussion list.

To subscribe to these, view and search the archives, please go to the Project Mailing Lists.
